                                                        The Nightingale and her Nest

The second day of the online school internship on 28.01.2021 (Thursday) gave me much to hope for.  It was actually a trial day where we tested the waters to find out the best possible action and strategy to proceed further. We wanted to study our children, learn more about them, about their aptitudes and learning habits so that we could provide them individual attention if needed. The first day has been truly inspiring and enlightening to me. Even though my students may lag a little behind when it comes to the language skills owing to their peculiar circumstances (the majority of them had their schooling till 5th in Tamil Nadu where they had almost little to no exposure to English or Malayalam for that matter). But they have genuine interest and yearning for knowledge. Their aesthetic sense and sense of appreciation are commendable. And as a language teacher, I felt blessed to have such a wonderful bouquet of flowers in my class. Each added their own shade of colour and beauty to our class. I wanted to make the class into a visual treat for the students. Because as it is often said making a first impression matters.

Highlights

Model

The Nightingale and her Nest

The model of the nest of the Nightingale was the major highlight of the class. The nest has been made of completely organic and readily available natural things. It really felt realistic and attractive. The nightingale and the eggs added beauty to the nest. The image will remain in the mind of the students forever.

Language Games

The language game given as an entry activity really helped to energize their students and to open themselves up to more. Their learning happens without their knowledge. Tongue Twisters on birds and flowers were much appreciated and liked by them.

Charts

Charts: The feeling of pen and paper

The students have been overexposed to PPTs. I really wanted to have a shift from there where they could go back to the feel of pen and paper. Charts have been used for activities and revisions.

Word Study

Word Study

The word study using situational teaching, pictures, and videos was highly successful as the students were able to remember the words well.

The song of birds

The voice of the birds adds beauty to our life. When the class is all about birds and music it would have been inappropriate if the voice of the birds and their beautiful melodies songs were not been introduced to the students. They really felt charmed!

Revision of Homework

Homework is not just something you write as part of a lesson plan. It gives the students a strong motivation, a feeling that they are trying to learn something. It is one of the easiest ways of reinforcement too.
